  • A Return to the Glass Onion - 02/02/16

Well, we did it. We returned to the Glass Onion. It’s been quite a while since we were at the Onion. Listen to our latest visit in our podcast at the bottom of the post.

The Glass Onion is always a good experience. It’s got a special little charm that is difficult to describe, but easy to enjoy. They also serve some pretty tasty wings.

The Glass Onion is a dive bar located within the hill section of Scranton. It’s a smaller place with a lengthy bar and some seating on the side. There’s no real windows and the place does allow smoking, so don’t plan on wearing your Sunday’s best if you don’t want that old smoke smell seeping into your three piece suit. The point of this place is that it’s not trying to impress anyone. It’s the type of place where you have to go up to the bar to order the food. The bartender was nice enough, and we didn’t have an issue with our order. It seems more like a townie bar, but I didn’t get the vibe that anyone wanted to kick our ass, which isn’t exactly the best vibe to get from a place. There’s a Juke Box to listen to music, and I did notice that they chill all of their mugs for beer. It’s a nice little touch that some place just won’t do. We didn’t run into any problems with ordering or paying, so overall, it’s a pretty decent place.

These were cheap at $0.35, but you would come across a couple hits and a couple misses. You had plenty of smaller sized one in the mix with larger ones too. In the end, it evened out to your typical regular sized wing. I finished my 15 wings with no issue.

There’s not a wild selection here, but it’s good to see that they offer more than just hot or mild. The Caesar garlic was a nice addition, but I’m missing places where they have an over abundance of wing choices.

    Wing Taste (x2): 5

I ordered the Hot Caesar Garlic, Hot Honey, and Hot. The Hot and Hot Caesar Garlic were pretty similar in my opinion. They both had great spiciness, with a bit more vinegary taste over butter. The Hot Caesar Garlic didn’t really have that Caesar or garlic taste to them. I tried looking for some garlic on the wing, but just couldn’t find it. It was basically hot sauce mixed with some Parmesan cheese. The Hot Honey wing pleasantly surprised me. I was expecting a sweater hot sauce mixed with honey, but it was actually the regular hot sauce with some of the honey mustard sauce drizzled over it. It was a simple wing, but for some reason, the taste was very appealing to me. I don’t generally like honey mustard, but it worked for me in this situation. And I don’t mean it worked for me as though I paid it an hourly wage, but it worked for me in the way that the mixture got the job done. Wait, I don’t mean it got the job done in the way that it actually did manual labor. Forget it. I’ll just say they were a good wing.

The Glass Onion is most definitely has a local bar feel to it. You can certainly get the impression that the place has its regulars and that not to many people stray into there that don’t normally go there. But to be honest, I never got the feeling of people staring at us or any sort of uncomfortable tone towards us. People were nice. Smoking is allowed so be prepared for that. We didn’t have a waiter/waitress. We realized that the only way to get food ordered is to order from the bar. There is also no pool table or dart board. The place is a straight up bar. Drinking and eating is all that takes place there and just find with me on occasion.

    Wing Size: 7

The wings were not terribly large. But for 35 cents a wing for wing night it was good deal in my estimation. If you’re looking to get full, get at least 25.

    Wing Flavors: 5

There were about 8 flavors or so, which is usually a good number for a solid rating but they didn’t have any unique flavors. They had mild, hot honey and garlic as flavors and then just combined two of them to make a flavor. That’s not terrible to do but I could of used different possible tastes. They also had bbq, honey mustard and caesar garlic.

    Wing Taste (x2): 5

I ordered hot, honey mustard, bbq and caesar garlic. The hot sauce that was used was pretty spicy, which I enjoyed. The caesar garlic was lacking in flavor all together. It actually like hot garlic instead of caesar garlic. Bbq and honey mustard were average. I’ve that exact flavor of both of those many times and it was simply boring. Average at best for the flavors.
